In Math we have been working on number four. In partners, the kids took turns shaking and dumping 4 double sided counters (red on one side, yellow on the other) from a cup. They recorded their results by colouring in four circles to match the colours of the counters they dumped. They did this eighteen times! The following day, with the same partner, they graphed their data on a big piece of paper. Can you see any patterns at a glance? Graphing helps us organize information. The kids were quick to see similarities between the graphs as well as differences. We can learn a lot from the graph by just looking at it, without even having to count. Can you see which combination was recorded the MOST times? What about the LEAST? We learned we can make 4 five different ways, writing number sentences.
4, 0 or 4 + 0 = 4
3, 1 or 3 + 1 = 4
2, 2 or 2 + 2 = 4
1, 3 or 1 + 3 = 4
0, 4 or 0 + 4 = 4
The final step to this graphing activity was transferring the results from the large graphs to individual bar graphs. Stay tuned for more work on 4...
